Cold Chisel proved too good in the Group 2 Alabar 3YO Classic at Alexandra Park on Friday night, besting archrival Chase A Dream and cementing himself as one of the favourites for the upcoming Group 1 Northern Derby.

The son of Always B Miki led easily from barrier one before being relegated to the trail when Major Hot swept round the field to take the lead with a lap to go.

Forced to bide his time until the passing lane presented itself, Cold Chisel sprinted sharply up the inside in the home straight to defeat Chase A Dream, who had enjoyed the one-one throughout, by three-quarters of a length.

The Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan trained runner has now won five of his 10 starts and banked $231,013 in stakes earnings.

Bred by Mark and Pauline OʻConnor and Owen Shaw, Cold Chisel is out of the stakes placed Presidential Ball mare Shezaball.
