Massive Metro wins Uncut Gems Trotting Classic
The Michelle Wallis and Bernie Hackett trained Muscle Mass 4-year-old Massive Metro was an impressive winner of the Listed PGG Wrightson's Uncut Gems Aged Trotting Classic (2,700m) at Alexandra Park on Friday evening.
Despite drawing wide on the front line, Massive Metro easily worked to the lead within the first 700m of the $40,000 feature. Taken on first by Sertorius and then race favourite Woodstone over the final lap, Massive Metro looked to be in for a fight in the home straight but the talented gelding had things under control, pulling out to a two length lead over Woodstone, which he maintained to the line to take a comfortable win.
It was the 4-year-old's sixth win to date and improved his earnings to $69,621.
Out of the former Group 1 winning Safely Kept mare Paris Metro, Massive Metro is also a half to four other winners including the $100,000 earner Commander Paris.
With just the one commercial crop racing to date, Muscle Mass has enjoyed another strong season of results, with a spectacular 83% winners to starters in both New Zealand and Australia in 2017-18.
He is also New Zealand's leading sire of 4-year-old trotters, with his progeny having won over $200,000 more than his nearest rival.
