Father Patrick sired the first two runners home in the Listed NZB Standardbred Harness Million 2YO Trot at Addington on Friday night, with the Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan trained Meant To Be getting the better of stablemate Higher Power on the line.

Beginning from the unruly and a number of lengths off the field when the gate left, Meant To Be worked his way to the back of the main bunch before moving up around the field with a lap to go in the $75,000 feature.

At Higher Powerʻs wheel with just under 800m to run, Meant To Be slowly but surely reeled in his stablemate, wearing him down with each stride in the straight to score by a half head.

It was his third win from just six starts to date and took his earnings to $74,100.

Bred by Breckon Farms, Meant To Be is out of the NZ Trotting Oaks and Derby winning Muscle Hill mare Luby Lou.

The runner-up Higher Power was also bred by Breckon Farms, with him being out of their multiple Group 1 winning Muscles Yankee mare High Gait.

Father Patrick remains New Zealandʻs leading sire of both 2YO and 3YO trotters to date in 2024, and with his progeny earnings having now surpassed $1,000,000 for the season he is also second on the NZ All Age Trotting Sires Premiership.
