Down Under Muscles too good in Scotch Notch03 October 2010 | Written by Nikki Reed
The Chris Alford trained Down Under Muscles opened his 5yo campaign in style, winning the Group 3 Scotch Notch Memorial at Tabcorp Park, Melton on Friday evening.
Fresh up since finishing runner up to fellow son of Muscles Yankee, Let Me Thru in the Group 1 Breeders Crown 4YO Trotters Final on Super Sunday at the end of August, Down Under Muscles began tardily from the stand, settling three back on the rails for much of the 2,760m feature. Despite his slow beginning the 5yo entire displayed a terrific turn of foot once clear in the straight to catch Earl Of Mot with ease and record a 2.5m win.
The win was Down Under Muscle's 14th from just 25 lifetime starts, improving his earnings to $137,300.
Out of the 15 win Entrepreneur mare Fionas Flair, Down Under Muscles has big shoes to fill being a half brother to the likes of A Touch Of Flair ($569,197, 34 wins including the Group 1 Australian Trotting Grand Prix, Dullard Cup and Victoria Trotters Derby), Son Of Flair ($257,909, Group 1 Victoria Trotters Derby, Vicbred 3YO Trotters Final) and Mighty Maori ($248,280, Group 1 Vicbred 4YO Trotter Final).
The talented trotter will be aimed at all the major trot races this summer, with the Inter Dominions in Christchurch early next year the long term target.
